Feminism and Democracy

Internationally, democracy is today an important subject. Democracy is a point of reference for debate on relevant issues at all levels. During the last decades, actions by feminist movements have contributed to the democratization of the social and political in the region.

We are undergoing a critical historical moment for reflection regarding debates about feminism and democracy in Latin America and the Caribbean. Minimal conditions are present for thinking democracy in the region. However, the struggle for democracy itself has not made possible the necessary deep reflection on feminism and democracy.

Due to tasks imposed by events taking place during recent years, feminist critical analysis and political action have been somewhat absent from the process of reflection about themselves. Democracy is a basic concept on renewing the discussion on feminist political analysis. In the first place, because it is a key element to such discussion, once feminist actions support the idea and proposal of democracy. Secondly, because a democratic understanding of feminism will enable us to face the various visions and lines of thought from a political standpoint, by expressing the commitment of feminism with the construction of democracy.
